The AWT Group, a member of the PKP CARGO Group, is continuing to expand its transport and customer portfolio in the area of combined transport. On 11 January it implemented the transports of the first train from Herne to Paskov for the important European transport organisation LKW WALTER. Four trains every week will be dispatched as part of this new regular service. The transports of trailers via rail also support the general attempt throughout Europe to constantly develop combined transport and shift freight transport from overcrowded roads and motorways to the railway.
On 11 January 2018 the first train carrying trailers arrived from Herne at the AWT terminal in Paskov. This is a new regular service between the Paskov terminal and Herne, which is in the large industrial area of the Ruhr district, to be precise between the cities of Essen and Dortmund. The company AWT is implementing this service for LKW WALTER, one of Europe’s most significant hauliers.
„These new intermodal transports are clear proof of the fact that AWT is going in the right direction. We want to develop further in the area of international transports, and in cooperation with PKP CARGO our strategy is to become a leading player in transports in Europe for the intermodal, automotive, agricultural and chemical industry,“ says Arkadiusz Olewnik, CEO of the AWT Group.
In addition to the actual complete traction, AWT also provides railway carriages for this transport. These are newly manufactured wagons of the type Sdggmrss T3000 and each waggon carries two trailers. At the terminal in Paskov, AWT also ensures complete servicing for trains from Herne. „With this new project we have doubled the number of handled trains carrying trailers at the terminal,“ says Viktor Bystrian, CCO of AWT.
On the regular service Paskov – Herne, AWT will use new Bombardier Traxx multisystem locomotives, which it has been operating since 4 January of this year. The train covers the entire route of more than 1100 km in somewhat less than a day. „This is a typical example where AWT can offer customers a fast and complete service for combined transport, including all services at the terminal,“ says Viktor Bystrian.
For ecological reasons amongst others, the aim of the EU policy is to shift freight transport from overloaded roads to the railways, and it is actively supporting this attempt through the adoption of various measures. Multimodal transport helps reduce the loading of the road network, especially in transports between large industrial areas. AWT has long been seeking out partners in the field of road haulage whom it can offer comprehensive services in the field of intermodality and where it can in part resolve these firms‘ lack of drivers, free capacity for new transports and stiff competition resulting from the arrival of new hauliers from neighbouring states.
„We want to give road hauliers the opportunity to transfer part of their transported volumes to the railway, to save and use drivers and truck tractors or other transport not suitable for multimodality,“ adds Viktor Bystrian.
