Responsible management of environmental protection is one of the ESG standards implemented at PKP CARGO Group.
The Company’s core business of operating rail freight transport is one of the most important areas of land transport development, which responds to the expectations related to climate protection. The strategic objective of responsible operation of the PKP CARGO Group in the area of environmental protection is to carry out safe freight transport using rolling stock that meets environmental requirements.
“The level of greenhouse gas emissions in rail freight transport is almost six times lower than in road freight transport.”
Mitigating the negative impact on the environment
Upgrades
We are reducing air emissions by purchasing modern electric locomotives and modernising our existing rolling stock, i.e. locomotives and wagons.
We are gradually eliminating sources of low emissions, i.e. small coal-fired boiler houses for heating buildings and technical facilities.
Protection against noise
A programme of acoustic retrofitting of freight wagons is gradually being implemented.
Cast iron brake inserts are being replaced with composite inserts.
Hazardous substances
We eliminate the risks associated with leaks of hazardous substances.
We use measures and technologies to eliminate the risk at source (environmental first-aid kits, seepage trays, oil separators, bunded tanks, etc.).
Waste management
We are developing internal solutions and regulations for waste management.
Among other things, we have identified ways to deal with the waste posing the greatest environmental risks (electrical and electronic equipment, asbestos, batteries, locomotive wrecks, etc.).
Environmental education
We organise training and create educational materials.
We build employees’ environmental awareness and support their responsible involvement in sustainable development.
